A male northern harrier, aka a gray ghost, soaring over a field of golden grass

Male northern harrier in Illinois

I was out in a large field photographing short-eared owls when I saw a large bird flying towards me out of the corner of my eye. I assumed it was an owl, or perhaps a female northern harrier, but after I was done firing away I was thrilled to see it was actually the more rare male northern harrier, which are nicknamed the "gray ghost".

I was focused on photographing Short-eared Owls in a large field when a large bird suddenly appeared in the periphery. My camera instincts took over, and I fired away. When I reviewed the photos, I was thrilled—it wasn't the expected owl or female harrier, but the more elusive male Northern Harrier, nicknamed the "Gray Ghost." This image captures the bird in full flight over the field, its gray and white plumage beautifully highlighted by the golden hour light that streams across its uplifted wing.
