American flamingo in Florida

About the photo

Flamingos were once abundant in Florida, but the plume trade nearly wiped them out in the late 1800s. They've returned to some parts of the state in much smaller numbers, so I couldn't pass up the opportunity to photograph them from a kayak while on a trip there.

Flamingos were once abundant in Florida, but the plume trade nearly wiped them out in the late 1800s. They've returned to some parts of the state in much smaller numbers, so I couldn't pass up the opportunity to photograph them from a kayak while on a trip there.

The American Flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber) is a striking example of natural specialization, with its iconic pink plumage derived from the carotenoid pigments in the brine shrimp and algae it filters from the water. In the shallow estuaries and salt pans of Florida, these birds utilize their uniquely curved bills—which they use upside down—to sift through the silt. This individual was captured during a quiet morning on the water, its vibrant salmon-colored feathers contrasting beautifully against the soft blues of the Florida marshland. The resurgence of these birds in the state is a hopeful sign for coastal conservation, marking the return of one of North America's most recognizable avian icons.

Capturing this portrait from the low vantage point of a kayak allowed for an intimate, eye-level perspective that emphasizes the flamingo's elegant stature and watchful gaze. This approach minimizes the disturbance to the bird, allowing for more natural behavior to be documented in a high-resolution frame. This photograph is a bold, sophisticated choice for those looking to add a pop of tropical color and a sense of wild history to their collection. The brilliant pinks and smooth water textures are exceptionally radiant on high-gloss metal prints, which provide a deep, modern clarity that makes the flamingo appear almost life-sized in its detail.
