Florida: The Subtropical Sanctuary
While my home is in the Midwest, Florida has become an essential winter refuge for my photography. The Sunshine State offers a stark and vibrant contrast to the muted tones of the Midwest, providing a prehistoric landscape where wildlife isn't just present—it is thriving. From the mangrove-lined estuaries of the Gulf Coast to the sprawling sawgrass marshes, Florida is a masterclass in avian diversity.
This collection is a celebration of color and light. It’s where I’ve spent early mornings in the fog waiting for the "pink flash" of a Roseate Spoonbill and afternoons on the sandy shorelines documenting the specialized foraging of the American Oystercatcher. The sheer abundance of life here—from the iconic Sandhill Crane colts to the deceptively stunning Glossy Ibis—allows for an intimate look at behaviors that are difficult to witness anywhere else in the country.
Photographing in Florida is an exercise in chasing the "golden hour" across a flat, water-dominated horizon. The humidity and coastal atmosphere create a soft, diffused light that brings out the iridescent details of a bird's plumage and the rhythmic patterns of the tide. This gallery represents my ongoing exploration of the Florida peninsula—a place where the wild spirit of the wetlands remains beautifully preserved.
