Glossy ibis in Florida

From afar, a glossy ibis looks like just another dark-feathered bird, but upon closer inspection, their plumage reveals stunning shades of maroon, emerald, and bronze.

While often found foraging in the freshwater marshes and flooded fields of the Florida Everglades, the Glossy Ibis is a master of camouflage until the sunlight hits its feathers at just the right angle. This particular individual was captured wading through the shallow wetlands during the golden hour, which accentuated the iridescent metallic sheen that gives the species its name. Unlike the more common White Ibis, the Glossy Ibis (Plegadis falcinellus) offers a more sophisticated palette for wildlife photography, demanding careful exposure management to preserve the detail in its dark, saturated colors without losing the delicate highlights of its curved, sickle-shaped bill.

Observing these birds in their natural Florida habitat requires a patient approach to capture their deliberate, rhythmic probing of the mud for aquatic invertebrates. In this composition, I focused on the stillness of the water to create a mirror-like reflection, emphasizing the bird's elegant silhouette and the rich, oily textures of its breeding plumage.
