On one of my Florida trips, I was fortunate to encounter a sandhill crane family featuring a pair of colts who were just days old. They were constantly entertaining themselves while mom and dad led the way in search of food.

Florida Sandhill Cranes (Antigone canadensis pratensis) are a unique, non-migratory subspecies, meaning their nesting cycles are closely tied to the local subtropical climate. Their young, known as "colts" due to their long, spindly legs, are precocial—they are capable of walking and following their parents within just hours of hatching. This early mobility is essential for survival in the Florida wetlands, allowing the family to move constantly in search of insects, tubers, and small reptiles. The "beak-to-beak" interaction captured here is a heartwarming display of the social bonding that begins almost immediately between siblings in the nest.
To capture this intimate, low-to-the-ground moment, I utilized a low-angle perspective that brings the viewer into the colts' world. By maintaining a shallow depth of field, I was able to isolate the soft, cinnamon-colored down of the colts from the lush green background of the Florida grass, highlighting their delicate features and the watchful presence of the parent behind them. This photograph is a charming and emotive choice for any nature-inspired fine art collection. Whether printed on vibrant, high-gloss metal or archival quality canvas, the intricate details of the colts' budding feathers and the warm, golden light of the marsh are rendered with stunning clarity.
