Reddish egret in Florida

Watching a reddish egret hunt is quite a spectacle, but I loved this shot of him standing still on a foggy morning when the wind made a mess of his feathers.

While often famous for their frantic "canopy feeding" dance in the salt marshes, the Reddish Egret (Egretta rufescens) is equally captivating in its rare moments of repose. This dark-morph individual was photographed on a misty Gulf Coast morning, where the dense coastal fog acted as a natural softbox, highlighting the shaggy, cinnamon-colored feathers of its head and neck. These specialized plumes are a hallmark of the species during the breeding season, and the way the sea breeze catches them in this frame emphasizes the rugged, coastal environment these birds call home.

Capturing a clear portrait of a Reddish Egret in heavy fog presents a unique technical challenge, as the low contrast can often confuse autofocus systems.
