Bison in the Lamar Valley of Yellowstone National Park

Nothing quite says Yellowstone like seeing large herds of bison in the Lamar Valley. In springtime it's even more special with the adorable baby bison, aka "red dogs", littered in amongst their large, darker parents.

The Lamar Valley, located in the Northern Range of Yellowstone National Park, is a vast glacial carved landscape that provides some of the most critical habitat for the plains bison (Bison bison bison). In the late spring, the valley floor transforms into a lush, emerald-green carpet, fueled by the melting snow from the surrounding Absaroka Mountains. This environmental landscape showcases the sheer scale of the herds as they follow the receding snowline to find the nutrient-rich new growth. The presence of low-hanging clouds in this frame adds a sense of primordial drama, emphasizing the timeless nature of this wild ecosystem.

Capturing the breadth of the Lamar Valley requires a wide-angle perspective that can encompass both the distant mountain peaks and the intricate details of the foreground sagebrush.
