Black-capped chickadee in Illinois

Black-capped chickadees are very common around here, but that doesn't mean I'd pass up an opportunity to photograph one when the conditions are just right.

The Black-capped Chickadee (Poecile atricapillus) is a master of the Midwestern winter, utilizing a remarkable survival strategy called regulated hypothermia to lower its body temperature on frigid Illinois nights. These birds are also famous for their complex "chick-a-dee-dee-dee" call; the number of "dee" notes at the end actually communicates the level of threat from a nearby predator. Observing their acrobatic movements as they glean insects from bark or visit a winter feeder provides a fascinating look at one of the most intelligent and socially complex small birds in the region.

Capturing the delicate features of a chickadee—from its namesake black cap and bib to the soft buffy tones of its flanks—requires a fast shutter speed to freeze its energetic movements.
