Coyote in Yellowstone National Park

This coyote silently crept through the sagebrush, trying to catch a ground squirrel off guard. I crouched a ways in front of him and as he slowly walked my way, completely focused on his prey, I was able to frame him in the surrounding sagebrush.

The Yellowstone coyote (Canis latrans) is a resilient predator, successfully coexisting with the park’s gray wolf populations by specializing in smaller prey. In the expansive sagebrush flats of the Northern Range, these highly adaptable canines are master hunters, often seen "mousing" or stalking Uinta ground squirrels. This head-on perspective captures the intense concentration required for a successful hunt; the coyote's forward-facing ears and narrowed eyes are perfectly attuned to the slightest rustle in the grass. By maintaining a low profile within the brush, I was able to document this intimate moment without disturbing the animal’s natural rhythm or focus.
