Great gray owl in Minnesota

About the photo

I don't like having to pick a favorite bird, but the Great Gray Owl is certainly up there. They're majestic birds with piercing yellow eyes, and watching them hunt in the winter is a sight to behold.

While my first encounter with a Great Gray Owl occurred in the mountains of Wyoming, finding them in the frozen landscapes of Northern Minnesota offers a completely different atmosphere. This individual was photographed in the heart of the Sax-Zim Bog, a legendary wintering ground for boreal species. During "irruption" years, when food sources like voles become scarce in the far north, these "Phantoms of the North" (Strix nebulosa) venture south into the tamarack bogs and hayfields of Minnesota. The muted, overcast light of a Minnesota winter provides a perfect, low-contrast canvas that highlights the intricate "bowtie" marking on the owl's neck and the immense size of its facial disks, which are used to pinpoint the sound of prey moving beneath a foot of snow.

Capturing a Great Gray Owl in this environment requires a deep respect for the bird's energy conservation during the harsh winter months. To get this shot, I utilized a long focal length and remained stationary, allowing the owl to maintain its hunt undisturbed. The resulting image captures the stoic resilience of the species against the biting cold of the Northwoods. When printed on archival semi-gloss paper or vibrant metal, the subtle grays and whites of the owl’s plumage blend beautifully with the wintery background, making it an ideal piece for collectors who appreciate the quiet, powerful mystery of the northern wilderness.
