Mountain bluebird in Yellowstone National Park

Love our eastern bluebirds here in the Midwest, but the mountain bluebirds are even more stunning with their sky blue feathers from beak to tail.

The Mountain Bluebird (Sialia currucoides) is a signature species of the open sagebrush flats and high meadows of Yellowstone’s Northern Range. While the Eastern Bluebirds I photograph in Illinois have a rich, rusty chest, the male Mountain Bluebird is distinguished by its completely cerulean plumage. This brilliant color isn't a pigment, but rather a result of the light-scattering structure of the feathers, making them appear to glow against the rugged landscape. I captured this male perched on a mossy boulder near the Lamar Valley, where they often hover over the grasslands searching for insects in the cool mountain air.

Photographing these small, vibrant birds against the muted tones of volcanic rock and sagebrush creates a striking natural contrast. To preserve the saturation of those sky-blue feathers without overexposing the highlights of the rock, I focused on achieving a clean, sharp exposure that highlights the bird’s inquisitive gaze. This photograph is a wonderful choice for collectors who want to bring a pop of vibrant color and the airy spirit of the Rockies into their home. The cerulean tones are particularly radiant on a high-gloss metal print, which mimics the natural metallic sheen of the bird's feathers and provides a deep, modern clarity.
