Red fox in Yellowstone National Park

The sun had just set as I was returning to my lodging for the evening when I came across this beautiful red fox hunting for its dinner in a roadside field.

The Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes) is a highly adaptable crepuscular hunter, meaning it is most active during the twilight hours of dawn and dusk. In the high-elevation meadows of Yellowstone, these foxes rely on their extraordinary hearing to locate the rustle of voles and pocket gophers beneath the grass. This "blue hour" encounter captures a moment of intense focus; as the light fades, the fox’s pupils dilate to gather every available photon, and its distinctive white-tipped tail—often called a "brush"—flicks with anticipation.
