A sea otter pops out of the water in Homer, Alaska.
This behavior, frequently referred to as "spyhopping," occurs when a sea otter (Enhydra lutris kenyoni) lifts its head and shoulders vertically out of the water to get a better vantage point of its surroundings. Unlike many marine mammals that rely primarily on sound or sonar, sea otters have keen eyesight both above and below the surface, which they use to monitor for potential predators or to keep an eye on other members of their raft. In the cold, nutrient-rich waters of Kachemak Bay, these moments of curiosity allow the otter to assess the shoreline while maintaining its buoyancy in the swell.
Capturing a spyhopping otter requires a fast shutter speed and high-precision autofocus to lock onto the animal's eyes before it slips back beneath the surface. By shooting at a low angle from the water’s level, I was able to capture the dramatic splash and the "whiskered" detail of its face as it emerged. This photograph is a dynamic choice for those who appreciate the playful and inquisitive nature of Alaska's coastal wildlife. Whether displayed as a high-gloss metal print to emphasize the water's movement or a vibrant archival canvas, this piece brings the energetic spirit of the Homer coast into any interior space.
