Snowy owl in Illinois

About the photo

Snowy owls are not very common visitors here in the Midwest, so it's always a treat when one sticks around for multiple days. They're most typically found in the middle of a cornfield or perhaps perched on a post, but this owl picked a rather unusual place to roost on top of someone's house. With an overcast sky and snow-covered roof, it looked as if he was floating in thin air.

The Snowy Owl (Bubo scandiacus) is a nomadic visitor to the Midwest, appearing in Illinois primarily during irruption years when juvenile birds fly south in search of territory and food. While their summer breeding grounds are in the high Arctic tundra, they find the flat, open expanses of the Illinois prairie—and even suburban rooftops—to be a suitable substitute for the frozen north. This individual, likely a juvenile given the heavy dark barring on its plumage, demonstrated the species' incredible adaptability. Their feathers are so dense that they are among the heaviest owls in North America, a necessary insulation for surviving sub-zero temperatures and high winds.

Capturing a white bird against a snow-covered roof and a white, overcast sky creates a challenging "high-key" composition. To maintain the subtle textures of the feathers and the glisten of the snow, I utilized a careful exposure that pushes the limits of the sensor’s highlights. The result is a minimalist, almost ethereal portrait that emphasizes the owl's piercing yellow eyes as the primary focal point. This fine art print is a stunning choice for a modern, bright interior, where the high-key aesthetic creates a sense of peace and winter wonder. On high-gloss metal, the whites appear exceptionally crisp and luminous, perfectly capturing the silent, arctic spirit of this rare visitor.
