T.A. Moulton Barn on Mormon Row in Grand Teton National Park

The most photographed barn on Mormon Row is the John Moulton barn, but I chose to photograph the T.A. Moulton barn because I love how its roof resembles the giant mountain peaks behind it. This was taken just after sunrise, as the sun kisses the mountaintops, creating that lovely alpenglow.

The T.A. Moulton Barn is a historic remnant of the Homestead Act, built by Thomas Alma Moulton between 1912 and 1945. Located within the Mormon Row Historic District, it stands as a testament to the perseverance of early settlers who farmed this rugged Wyoming landscape. What makes this barn so visually compelling for landscape photography is its unique gambrel roof, which perfectly echoes the jagged silhouette of the Teton Range, including the towering Grand Teton peak itself. During the autumn months, the surrounding sagebrush and cured grasses take on a golden hue that complements the weathered wood of the structure, providing a rich, monochromatic warmth to the frame.

To capture the fleeting alpenglow on the mountain peaks, I utilized an HDR (High Dynamic Range) technique to balance the deep shadows of the barn's foreground with the brilliant, sun-kissed summits of the Cathedral Group. This approach ensures that the intricate textures of the hand-hewn logs and the subtle gradients of the morning sky are preserved in high resolution. This photograph is a timeless choice for those looking to add a sense of Western history and mountain serenity to their home. When printed on vibrant, high-gloss metal or archival canvas, the clarity of the Teton peaks and the warm morning light create a sophisticated focal point that brings the spirit of the Tetons into any room.
