White-breasted nuthatch in Illinois

Nuthatches are usually pretty busy hopping up, down, and all around tree trunks, so photo opps are few and far between. Luckily, this one paused right on the edge of the tree trunk with the morning sun reflecting off a building in the background, producing some pleasing bokeh.

The White-breasted Nuthatch (Sitta carolinensis) is an year-round resident of Illinois woodlands, easily recognized by its nasal "yank-yank" call and its remarkable ability to climb headfirst down tree trunks. Unlike woodpeckers, which use their tails for support, nuthatches rely entirely on their strong legs and claws to navigate vertically. This specialized anatomy allows them to find insects hidden in the bark that other birds might miss. In the early spring, their activity increases as they establish territories and begin caching seeds in the crevices of oak and hickory trees, which are abundant in the forest preserves of DuPage County.

Capturing this "upside-down" bird while it remained stationary was a rare stroke of luck.
