Lesser scaup in Illinois

March is a great month for photographing waterfowl, but snow has become more uncommon in the month. On this day, a late snowstorm was not too light but not too heavy, creating a perfect snowglobe environment to capture this lesser scaup.

The Lesser Scaup (Aythya affinis) is a medium-sized diving duck that frequently visits Illinois lakes and wetlands during its spring migration. While they are often seen in large, floating rafts on open water, a solitary encounter during a late March snowstorm offers a more intimate look at the species. The male’s distinctive "peaked" head shape and subtle iridescent sheen are highlighted against the soft, white texture of the falling snow. These ducks are remarkable divers, often plunging to the bottom of the lake to forage for aquatic invertebrates and seeds, fueling up for the long journey toward their northern breeding grounds.

Capturing a high-speed subject in a snowstorm requires careful consideration of the camera’s autofocus system, as falling flakes can easily distract the sensor.
