Obsidian, the grizzly bear, and her cubs in Yellowstone National Park

About the photo

In mid-May there was still snow on the ground in the middle of Yellowstone National Park and I had the fortune to come across the grizzly bear known as "Obsidian" with her three 2.5-year-old cubs as they crossed the road in front of me.

In mid-May, with snow still dusting the ground in Yellowstone National Park, I encountered the legendary grizzly bear known as "Obsidian" and her three 2.5-year-old cubs foraging along the roadside. When they decided to cross, I was thankfully joined by only a handful of other cars, giving the family plenty of room. Like the protective mother she is, Obsidian looked both ways, keeping her cubs tucked safely behind her as she led them across the asphalt and back into the snowy woods.

Obsidian is one of the most famous grizzly sows (Ursus arctos horribilis) in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, known for her successful rearing of multiple litters in the high-traffic areas of the park. This family crossing is a poignant example of the daily challenges these apex predators face; navigating park roads and human presence requires a calm, experienced mother. In this scene, captured during a light spring snowfall, you can see the distinctive "grizzled" silver-tipped fur that gives the species its name. The cubs, likely in their second year (yearlings), follow her lead closely, learning the essential migration routes and foraging spots that will ensure their survival once they eventually disperse.

Photographing a group move like this requires a wide-frame composition to capture the interaction between the mother and all three cubs. By staying at a respectful distance and utilizing a fast shutter speed, I was able to freeze the synchronized gait of the family as they moved with purpose across the pavement and back into the safety of the pines. This photograph is a must-have for Yellowstone enthusiasts and collectors of fine art wildlife photography. The contrast of the dark bears against the gray road and the falling snow creates a powerful, narrative-driven piece that truly shines on high-gloss metal, which enhances the luminosity of the snowflakes and the rich texture of the bears' coats.
