With their mother, Obsidian, leading the way just ahead, two of her cubs moved cautiously along the snowy edge of the deep woods in Yellowstone. It was still mid-May, and the moisture of the winter-spring transition clung to their dark, shaggy fur and the pine needles around them.

At 2.5 years old, these grizzly cubs (Ursus arctos horribilis) are entering a critical stage of their development. This is often the final season they will spend under the protection of their mother, Obsidian, before venturing out as sub-adults. Observing them navigate the dense lodgepole pine forests of Yellowstone's interior offers a glimpse into the social learning and physical endurance required for independent survival. The presence of spring snow adds a layer of complexity to their foraging, as they must rely on their mother’s experience to find the first emerging high-protein food sources of the year.
