A grizzly bear walks through the woods with some light snow on the ground

Obsidian, the grizzly bear, in Yellowstone National Park

In mid-May there was still snow on the ground in the middle of Yellowstone National Park and I had the fortune to come across the grizzly bear known as "Obsidian" with her three 2.5-year-old. Photographed is mama bear leading her cubs along the edge of the woods.

I was waiting quietly by the roadside in Yellowstone National Park in mid-May, hoping to photograph the famed grizzly sow, "Obsidian." She soon appeared, leading her three cubs just out of sight behind the treeline. As she marched toward the road's edge, she paused, stepping onto the snowy bank, and fixed her gaze directly forward. This portrait captures the stunning, split-second intensity of that moment—her damp, massive form and piercing focus beautifully embody the untamed spirit of the Yellowstone wilderness.
